Training Goals
The goal of BACW’s cultural competence training is to:
 
  • Increase professionals' capacity (awareness, knowledge and skills) to effectively address cultural differences among diverse children and families by recognizing when cultural factors may be influencing interpersonal dynamics
     
  • Enhance the human service practitioner’s effectiveness in cross-cultural communication and problem solving
     
  • Prepare agencies to realize cost savings in recruiting and retaining culturally competent practitioners and staff
     
  • Equip agencies to develop protocols for providing culturally appropriate child welfare services and ongoing assessments of their cultural climate
     
  • Strengthen the agency’s ability to identify and address cultural issues
     
  • Provide customized cultural competence training for existing and new staff members at all levels
     
  • Develop strategies to maintain the agency’s commitment to diversity
     
    The training curriculum will prepare professionals to:
     
  • Value, embrace, and institutionalize diversity
     
  • Identify and eliminate barriers to cultural competence
     
  • View culture from a strengths perspective
     
  • Negotiate cultural differences through effective cross-cultural communication
