The transition to adulthood and self- sufficiency is never easy. However, it presents a particular challenge to the estimated 20,000 young adults who transition annually from the foster care system.  The age range for “aging-out” varies across the states between age 18 and 21.  Often these young people do not have family who are able to give the needed emotional and/or financial support. In addition, they cannot turn to the state once they have been discharged from care. Consequently, the transition to adulthood is a challenge that they face largely on their own. MORE

Celebrating Our Legacy: The Gateway to New Village Leadership in Child Welfare
From its inception, the Black Administrators in Child Welfare Inc. has existed to become a strong voice and a powerful force for African American children and their families in the child welfare system. Like most Black organizations, BACW was born out of the Civil Rights Movement and we stand today on the backs of our legendary founding members. In 2007 our conference theme, Celebrating our Legacy: The Gateway to New Village Leadership in Child Welfare will focus on remembering the lessons of our founders as we prepare new leaders in child welfare to serve African American children and families. Building Partnerships to Serve African American Children and Families
The focus of the 2006 BACW conference was on building partnerships to serve African American Children and Families and move beyond raising awareness of what our young people need to become successful adults and also create a space that will move us to action. We propose to expand our network of participants and increase our efforts to reduce and ultimately prevent further placement of African American children in the foster care system. Business and civic leaders are beginning to recognize that the cost of non-involvement is far greater on the economic viability of the community at-large. Therefore, we must foster opportunities for partnership and address the pressing needs of our children and families now or face the consequences for generations to come.

Rebuilding the Village
The 2004 BACW annual conference was held February 29 to March 2 at the Sheraton National Hotel in Arlington, Virginia. The theme, "Rebuilding the Village," explored the concept of the "village" where children were nurtured, protected and instilled with values that reinforced connection to family and community, and where everyone lends a helping hand to vulnerable families in need. Although a fading memory for many, the notion of a healthy, functioning village remains a dream still worth pursuing.
